How to take hold of overthinking: focus on the task itself.

How to take hold of overthinking: focus on the task itself.

Overthinking and procrastinating would no longer exist if we took the emotion out of the task. Remove all the fear, judgment, and worry from what you want to do so it leaves you to focus on just the task itself. Then it will be easier for you to look at the task and figure out the steps involved to make it happen, without letting the fears distract you.

Say you're going to put on your shoes: you slip your feet in then fasten them, all without overthinking, because you're focused on the task at hand. You're also not letting the fear of the outcome get in the way. You're not worrying, "what if they're too tight?" or "will this feel uncomfortable?" because you have the ability to adjust the shoes however necessary - your initial actions aren't set in stone if you don't want them to be. All of the thoughts and fears can really keep us from trying, so try to think of things as simple as putting on your shoes.

So often we see a task or a dream or something we want to accomplish, and we get so overwhelmed by the steps involved that we allow our emotions to get in the way of even starting. We can start thinking, "so I have to do x before I do y. And x is going to take me 2 weeks and y is going to take me 1 month to finish. So I won't reach z any time soon; that's just too far away. And I'm not even sure that y is going to work out..." I think you get the picture. We can go so far down that rabbit hole that we keep ourselves from taking that first step.

But if we took the initiative right when we thought of that idea, we'd feel so accomplished for getting it done that we'd have the momentum to propel us right into the next step. And we'd probably reach our long-term goal faster than if we stayed there and let our emotions spin out of control. Achieving each smaller goal would even give you the confidence to strive for larger goals because you've just set the standard of what's possible.

My advice is to keep that idea close to you: write it down and take some quiet, focused time to plan out the steps in making it a reality. When those worries and that overthinking try to come in, quickly acknowledge them and release your focus from them: bring your mind back to your plan. As long as you have a plan in place and you're taking action at each step to get to the next, there's nothing you can't accomplish. So show yourself what you're capable of.
